Varsity is an older, established residential neighbourhood in northwestern Calgary. The triangle-shaped community follows Crowchild Trail to the north, down to 32 Avenue in the south. The eastern border follows the Bow River up through beautiful Bowmont Park and along Silver Springs Gate NW. As the name suggests, it is near the University of Calgary, which is right across 32 Avenue NW.
Varsity is an older neighbourhood divided into three different developments, each with its own style of living. Varsity Acres dates back to the 1960s and features tree-lined streets. In the early '70s, Varsity Village was established with a focus on pedestrian pathways and less car traffic. The upscale Varsity Estates is made up of single-family homes, many of which back onto Bowmont Park.
Amid the luxury homes and condos, there are plenty of stores and businesses that cater to all needs — including some great coffee shops and hangouts for the university crowd. Of course, Bowmont Park and other green spaces within Varsity can be enjoyed by any income level. Market Mall has more than 200 stores, offering everything from high fashion to fast food.
There isn’t much to nitpick about the Varsity neighbourhood, but because of all the amenities and attractions it is a very busy place at times. Many shops and businesses attract crowds during football games or sporting events at Foothills Park. Concerts and other events at the university will also attract large numbers. This is usually contained to the business areas though, and the residential streets mostly remain fairly quiet.
Varsity boasts a plethora of transportation goodies for commuters. There are two C-Train stations (Brentwood and Dalhousie) along Crowchild Trail. The University is walking distance for many residents who work or attend school there. If you have to drive, Shaganappi Trail and Crowchild Trail are both main commuter routes that connect with the rest of the city easily.
Residents don’t have far to go for shopping, entertainment, or recreation. Market Mall on the south side is one of the city’s largest indoor malls. The University of Calgary has recreational and entertainment facilities along with a world-class research centre called Innovate Calgary. Foothills Park and McMahon Stadium are to the southeast of Varsity, and both offer excellent sports facilities.
Most of the residents in Varsity are in their 20s, which comes as no surprise given how many post-secondary students choose the area for its convenience. However, there are a lot of families living in the northern part of the community too, and they also love the great outdoor space that Varsity has to offer.
The mix of upscale single-family homes and multi-dwelling apartment complexes makes for an eclectic vibe. Residents can agree on the natural beauty of Varsity’s parks and easy access to amenities like shopping, transit, and schools. The University of Calgary has a number of great facilities for area residents to enjoy as well.
