Ramsay

Calgary

Introduction

Ramsay is one of Calgary’s oldest neighbourhoods, developed in 1880. It is located in the southeast quadrant of Calgary and is bordered by the Elbow River, Macleod Trail, the Stampede Grounds and Inglewood. It was not named Ramsay until 1956, previously it was made up of three small communities called Burnsland, Brewery Flats and Mills Estate.

Lifestyle

Popping into Ramsay often feels like you've stepped outside of the bustling city into a quaint neighbouring town. The homes are older, the businesses are established and the people who live here never want to leave. With beautiful gardens and established tree-lined streets, it is hard to imagine why anyone would ever leave. The lifestyle of this community can be described as eclectic and neighbourly.

Dollars & Sense

Ramsay is going through a bit of a transition with new infills and townhomes being built on older lots. However, it is still the kind of neighbourhood that you can get a $2 coffee in. Ramsay is the least pretentious community and all residents love that about it. House prices have been rising to above average due to the close proximity to downtown but rental prices are average.

The Good, the Bad & the Rest

Ramsay is a quaint neighbourhood with great character and charm. The tree-lined streets and western views of the Calgary skyline have made it a very desirable neighbourhood to get into. However, the gentrification process always comes with its disadvantages; this time of transition means some disruption to the area. The close proximity to the CP Rail train yards could also be seen as a disadvantage to the neighbourhood.

Distance from City Hall

In the Area

Ramsay has several schools in the area including Ecole Ste. Anne Elementary, Junior and Senior, Ramsay Elementary Public School and Janus Academy, a private school for children with Autism. Ramsay is only 2.2 km away from City Hall. Ramsay’s ridge also looks over the Elbow River from Scotsman’s Hill, a popular lookout spot for fireworks.

Meet the Neighbours

Ramsay truly has a mixed bag in terms of neighbours. It is a family-friendly neighbourhood with young families enjoying the schools and amenities of the area. There are also people who have lived here for decades and are a big part of the community. Young professionals and students have also been known to flock to this area because of the multi-bedroom homes that are great for sharing with roommates.

The Vibe

Ramsay feels like a small town in the middle of a big city. It has a rustic charm like no other neighbourhood in Calgary. It has often been referred to as a blue collar neighbourhood It is definitely a tight-knit community and people who live here have strong opinions on how this neighbourhood should be run.
