Oleskiw, Westridge and Rio Terrace are located in Edmonton’s westend. They’re tucked in the bend of the river, bound by Whitemud Drive and 159th. The Wolf Willow and Patricia Ravines divide the area with the ritzier Oleskiw and Westridge neighbourhoods, locally known as “The Country Club” to the southwest and Rio Terrace community, which includes Quesnell and Patricia Heights to the north east.
These neighbourhoods share amenities and river valley access, but the lifestyles differ slightly from one side to the other. Those living close to the swanky Edmonton Country Club or along the cliffs of the river valley afford a very luxurious country-club-like lifestyle. The other communities are privileged too, though more on the average side. The entire area offers exceptional river valley views, outdoor recreation and community programming.
Drive into Oleskiw or along the river front streets of Westridge and you’ll definitely feel like you’re at the Country Club. However, it isn't snobby; everyone is welcoming and neighbours will smile hello as you pass them on the river valley trails. Closer to the Whitemud you’ll find active community leagues and parks bursting with families enjoy each other and the community. The entire community is welcoming and very attractive.
Walking down the street you’ll pass groups of retirees on a fitness walk and kids on bicycles. According to the latest municipal census, 70 per cent of residents on the “Country Club” side earn more than $100,000 annually. The majority of them are 50-something with young teenagers at home. Families also reside in Rio Terrace, but are a little younger.
One of most notable feature of this area is the access to the river valley and ravine parks. The trails here are particularly beautiful and give access to brand new Fort Edmonton Park footbridge. The Beth Israel Jewish Synagogue is in Oliskew and an impressive riverfront Jewish Community Centre is in Rio Terrace. Commercial shops and services, medical centres and schools are all nearby.
170th Street takes most vehicle traffic in and out of the neighbourhood, leading you to Whitemud Drive or the Anthony Henday in the other direction. There are a few bus routes that will take you out to 170th and towards West Edmonton Mall to a bigger transit station. Travel by bicycle along pave paths across the river towards Fort Edmonton and other river valley parks.
Though this area and its neighbourhoods may seem divided, they are well connected creating togetherness and a friendly community. There are several very active community leagues that offer programs for all walks of life and neighbours are often outside of their homes enjoying recreation and socialization within their very beautiful community.
It’s expensive here. Homes are priced slightly lower closer to 170th street and near the Whitemud Freeway, but you won’t find a bargain. The shops near 170th street are your typical strip-mall style places and are affordable. Regular chain stores and restaurants nearby are priced as you might expect: regularly.
