New Edinburgh

Ottawa

Introduction

New Edinburgh is bordered on the west by the Rideau River, to the north by the Ottawa River, to the south by Beechwood Avenue, and on the east by Princess Avenue. New Edinburgh is a unique mix of both its upscale neighbour, Rockcliffe Park, and the lower income neighbourhood of Vanier. These affluent residents are just as wealthy as the Rockliffe Parkers, but with perhaps a little less pretention!

Lifestyle

New Edinburgh is an active community for the fit and healthy. The popular New Edinburgh Park boasts tennis courts, bike paths through lush scenery, patios, outdoor markets, art shows and more. Swing by 24 Sussex and see if you can catch a glimpse of the Prime Minister. One of the nicest, best kept secrets is the Rideau Falls that shoot into the Rideau River.

Dollars & Sense

The good? It’s home to friendly people, quiet streets, and the location is ideal. The bad? Some people don’t like living so close to Vanier, which has, for decades, held a less than desirable reputation. But the city is trying hard to give this quaint neighbourhood a massive facelift, and it’s working. And, as any New Edinburgher will tell you, their community is safe because of their diligence.

The Good, the Bad & the Rest

This area is home to some of the top private schools in Ottawa, perfect for grooming your young ones. There are also many local coffee shops, big grocery stores such as Metro and Loblaws, great bike paths and many parks backing onto the Ottawa River. The area is also home to some top retirement residences, and the local hospitals are only a few kilometres away.

Planes, Trains & Automobiles

With the proximity to downtown and so many bike paths, many residents prefer to park their sedans and hop on bikes. For those who prefer to drive, Hwy. 417 is only minutes away. There are also many bus routes along Beechwood Ave. which will quickly take you to east towards St. Laurent, or west towards Quebec and Kanata.

In the Area

New Edinburgh is a $6 latte type of neighbourhood where residents insist on organic and gluten-free produce. You’ll pay more for homes and higher for rent because of the proximity to downtown as well as Rockcliffe Park, Ottawa’s most expensive neighbourhood. And yet, the local pubs serve anything from cheap domestic beer, to expensive ciders.

Meet the Neighbours

New Edinburgh is home to many embassies, consulates, and yes, even the Prime Minister. Because of the hefty price tag on these homes, most residents are middle aged or retirees. But there are clusters of young families who have managed to snag some prime property in this in-demand neighbourhood. This is mostly an English speaking area full of people who pride themselves on looking out for their neighbours.

The Vibe

New Edinburgh, although home to only 3,000 residents, is a bustling community. The New Edinburgh patio is busy, the Second Cup parking lot is full, and the new moms meet daily for their strollersize walks. These neighbours are quick to wave, but don’t misinterpret this as naivete. If you seem in any way suspicious, these residents will be sure to have the local police on your tail in minutes.
