Hermitage

Introduction

Hermitage is located in northeast Edmonton, bounded by 50 Street Eest, Yellowhead Trail to the south and the Kennedale Ravine to the north; tucked in by the North Saskatchewan river to the east. Hermitage consists of three small neighbourhoods: Overlanders, Homesteader and Canon Ridge all joined by connector roads and multi-use trails.

Lifestyle

Access to the river valley at Hermitage Park is a key part of the lifestyle here. On any given Saturday the park is full of dog walkers, cyclists, and river and pond-side anglers and in the winter even people snow shoeing and dog sledding! There are lots of young professionals and young families here, enjoying quick access to major commercial areas and recreation centres.

Dollars & Sense

All in all, Hermitage is an affordable place to live. Townhomes can be purchased for under $200,000 and apartment condos for much less. Most of the restaurants and shops are reasonably priced and all of the chain restaurants and big box stores are just as expensive as they are anywhere else.

The Good, the Bad & the Rest

Hermitage is one of the most affordable neighbourhoods in Edmonton for homes with river valley views. Unfortunately, any views that point upstream will take in a row of oil refineries complete with billowing smokestacks. Neighbourhoods north and south of Hermitage have sketchy reputations for crime, but Hermitage itself seems to have escaped much of that and is safe and peaceful for the most part.

Planes, Trains & Automobiles

Major bus routes run through Hermitage, taking passengers to the Claireview Transit station where you can hop on the LRT to get downtown within 10 minutes. Head south on Victoria Trail or 50 Street and you’ll be on the Yellowhead Trail, a major freeway that runs through the city east to west. Head north on 50 Street to get on the Manning Freeway towards the Anthony Henday ring road.

In the Area

Hermitage has a lot of parkland including the river valley, Canon Ridge Park and Kennedale Ravine. Major box stores and grocery stores are located just 5 minutes away at Claireview Towne Centre. The Claireview Community Recreation Centre is nearby while the Edmonton Soccer Centre East is right in Hermitage. You’ll also find medical centres, schools, churches and parks right in the neighbourhood.

Meet the Neighbours

There is a diversity of housing in Hermitage that includes detached homes, row houses and apartment style units. This has brought a diverse range of neighbours, though most are similar in age. According to the latest report from Census Canada, nearly 40 per cent of residents are between ages 20 and 39, 50 per cent of residents are married couples and half of those have children at home.

The Vibe

It seems hectic and a little rundown if you come into the neighbourhood via 50 Street. Once you turn into Hermitage you’ll be welcomed by wide curving streets, quiet residential areas and plenty of green spaces. It feels like any other suburban neighbourhood, with people going about daily errands, heading off to work or for a peaceful walk by the river.
