One of Calgary’s oldest neighbourhoods, Erlton is located just southwest of downtown. It features beautiful parks and access to Elbow River, which wraps around the northern boundary. Erlton stretches from Spiller Road in the east and down Mission Road in the south. One of the biggest concerns voiced by residents is the traffic in and around their community. In a recent survey of residents, 54 percent of respondents said traffic is a problem in the neighbourhood. Complainants listed concerns about drivers shortcutting through Erlton to avoid lights along Macleod Trail during rush hour and Stampede.
Macleod Trail bisects the neighbourhood and acts as a major thoroughfare for north-south commuting. There are bus routes that service the community and the Erlton/Stampede C-Train station is located in the neighbourhood's northeast sector. City Hall is only a couple of kilometres away, and many who work downtown choose to cycle or walk because it is so close.
Erlton is between two of Calgary’s largest and most popular festival and event scenes. 17th Ave is located in the northwestern area – it's the shopping and entertainment district famous for the Red Mile during playoff games. The Stampede Grounds is to the northeast, where Calgary Flames fans can cheer their team at the Saddledome, which also hosts many major concerts. The Calgary Stampede takes over the city every July.
Young adults make up the bulk of the 1,210 people who call Erlton home, according to 2014 Calgary civic census statistics. The abundance of apartment-style condos and rental properties, in addition to the proximity to downtown, make it ideal for single- or newly-married couples. According to the 2011 Canadian census, nearly 35% of the population are single.
