Dundonald

Saskatoon

Introduction

Developed in the 1980s, Dundonald is an established Saskatoon neighbourhood with beautiful parks and large trees. Located in the far western area of the city, it offers affordable homes, two schools, and a quiet community feel. The community's northern barrier is 37 St. W., and its southern one is 33 St. W. The western and eastern borders are Byng Avenue and Junor Avenue, respectively.

Lifestyle

Dundonald’s two schools and parks are appealing to young families seeking a safe, affordable neighbourhood. The community association operates a winter rink and hosts recreational sports throughout the year. Every summer, the community comes together to host a garage sale and celebrate Canada Day. A mostly residential district, it’s a quick trip to the Confederation commercial district, with plenty of amenities for all ages and interests.

Dollars & Sense

Dundonald is considered an affordable neighbourhood, with housing prices lower than in the east side of the city. According to the City of Saskatoon, the average rental cost in 2011 was $956 per month for a one-bedroom. Although the rental supply here is low, this price is high for the neighbourhood.

The Good, the Bad & the Rest

While Dundonald is located in the city’s west side, it’s far away from the district’s nighttime activity. This community is off the beaten path, and residents are protective of one another. Most of the traffic is contained to 33 St. W., and the interior streets are laid-back and family-friendly. An established neighbourhood, people here enjoy great houses with big lots and lower prices compared to the east side.

Getting around Dundonald is easy when you use the main corridors, Wedge Road, 33 St. W., and Junor Avenue. The city bus service runs through the area to the Confederation bus mall, and connects to the University of Saskatchewan, Saskatchewan Polytechnic, and the downtown business district. The John Diefenbaker International Airport is just 6.1 kilometres away.

In the Area

Residents of the community love the beautiful Dundonald Park, which is flanked by a public and a Catholic school. Dundonald Elementary School and St. Peter Elementary School both offer kindergarten through grade eight instruction in English. Two nearby high schools, Tommy Douglas Collegiate and Bethlehem High School, are connected with the public swimming pool and leisure facility, Shaw Centre.

Meet the Neighbours

According to a 2014 municipal profile, an estimated 5,667 people live in the Dundonald neighbourhood. English is the first language of approximately three-quarters of residents, with many people speaking Tagalog (the language of the Philippines) in addition to some German, Spanish, and French. The area is popular with families, and most adults are younger than the age of 50.

The Vibe

As a little slice of suburbia, Dundonald's sidewalks, parks, and schools project a relaxed atmosphere that's different from the activity of more central neighbourhoods. In the evening, it’s common to find children, adults, and older couples outside enjoying everything the area has to offer. While the shopping centres and leisure centres are still close by, the hustle and bustle is outside the neighbourhood, allowing residents to maintain a balanced lifestyle.
