Bridlewood-Emerald Meadows

Ottawa

Introduction

Settled in the early 19th century, Ottawa’s Bridlewood-Emerald Meadows neighbourhood is bordered by the Greenbelt in the north, Hope Side Road in the south, the Greenbelt and Richmond Road to the east, and Eagleson Road to the west. The area remained mainly agricultural until the 1960s, when it was acquired and developed. Bridlewood-Emerald Meadows has enjoyed steady growth ever since.

Lifestyle

With affordable square footage and convenient access to childcare and schools, this friendly neighbourhood has families in mind. Modern suburban street planning offers plenty of parking, while proximity to the Greenbelt ensures that while this community will likely continue to enjoy new growth, it will never truly lose its rural charm.

Dollars & Sense

Houses in the area start around the $250,000 range for a two-bedroom attached or semi-detached, and go as high as approximately $450,000 for four-bedroom detached homes. The area’s main design is to attract families and first-time buyers looking to start their own. Bridlewood-Emerald Meadows is home to kid-friendly green spaces, parks, and bike paths while lacking shops, stores, and offices.

The Good, the Bad & the Rest

Bridlewood-Emerald Meadows has been so successful at attracting homebuyers that the neighbourhood has had a hard time keeping up. Traffic problems have plagued this expanding neighbourhood, and city planners have been slow to respond. As with most suburbs, there is a high volume of car commuters. Optimistically, the anticipated OC Transpo light rail project should alleviate some of this congestion in the future.

Local and city-wide bus service is provided through OC Transpo.

Designed to cater to family living, the average distance to the grocery store is 1.8 kilometres. There are also plenty of primary schools to choose from, including public schools like W.O. Mitchell Elementary School, Bridlewood Community Elementary School, and Roch Carrier Elementary School. Area Catholic schools include St. James Catholic School, St. Anne Catholic School, and the newly built Elizabeth Bruyere Catholic School.

Meet the Neighbours

Recent neighbourhood studies show the average household salaries vary broadly, with the most represented income levels between $20,000 and $80,000. Bridlewood-Emerald Meadows is predominantly populated by younger families, with 16.8 percent of residents aged 10 to 19 years, and has four times the amount of childcare programs compared with the city average. With a total population 21,250, 68.6 percent of residents speak English at home.

The Vibe

Green spaces and manicured lawns separate the winding drives, lanes, and crescents that make up this charming Ottawa suburb. Equestrian street names conjure images of the area’s rural farming past. The Bridlewood-Emerald Meadows neighbourhood includes relatively new houses and is comfortable and safe, while also providing accessibility to local commercial areas.
